Bagram, Afghanistan, 1996 Northern aliance soldiers hide during aerial bombardement during a fight with Taliban troops north of the capital Kabul. During Taliban rule, Mazar-I-Sharif, the biggest town in northern Afghanistan served as last stronghold for the anti Taliban Northern Aliance. A relative freedom reigned for men and women alike.
